Overview

About Type B Bulk Bags

A Type B FIBC is woven from polypropylene fabric engineered to have a breakdown voltage of less than 6 kV. This prevents propagating brush discharges, high-energy static events that can ignite flammable dust clouds. Type B bags are used by chemical, pharmaceutical, food processing, agricultural and mining operations that handle dry flammable powders in environments free of flammable vapours.

Like Type A bags, Type B bags are made from insulating polypropylene. The difference is that the fabric's low breakdown voltage stops static charge on the bag surface from building up to the level needed for a propagating brush discharge. Under IEC 61340-4-4, this makes Type B bags suitable for dry flammable powders with a Minimum Ignition Energy (MIE) above 3 mJ.

Type B bags contain no conductive threads or dissipative materials, so they cannot ground or actively dissipate charge. They must never be used where flammable solvents, gases or vapours are present, whatever the MIE of the powder. Powders with an MIE below 3 mJ, or any flammable atmosphere, need Type C or Type D bags. Every bag is tested for breakdown voltage, tensile strength, seam strength and top lift.

Key features

Why choose our Type B Bulk Bags

01

Prevents brush discharges

Fabric breakdown voltage below 6 kV stops the high-energy propagating brush discharges that can ignite dust clouds.

02

For flammable dry powders

Suitable for powders with MIE above 3 mJ where no flammable vapours, gases or solvents are present.

03

No grounding needed

Protection comes from the fabric itself, so no earthing connection is required. It does not actively dissipate charge.

04

Batch-tested fabric

Breakdown voltage, tensile strength, seam strength and top lift tests are carried out before dispatch.

05

Contained filling options

Spout tops and sealed discharge spouts reduce airborne dust when handling flammable powders.

06

Same strength as standard bags

250–2,000 kg SWL with safety factors of 3:1, 5:1, 6:1, 8:1 and fabric weights up to 240 GSM.

Build options

Construction & configuration options

Every bag is made to order — choose the construction, loops, top and bottom that suit your filling and discharge equipment.

Construction

  • 4-Panel – Four precision-cut panels and a separate base give a rigid bag with tight dimensional tolerances for automated filling.
  • U-Panel – A single U-shaped panel forms two sides and the base, removing the base-to-body seam and spreading load evenly.
  • Circular – A seamless woven tube with stitched top and base panels, strong for its fabric weight and cost-efficient in volume.
  • Baffle – Internal corner baffles keep the bag square and prevent bulging, improving pallet and container use.
  • Net Baffle – Mesh corner baffles hold the square shape while letting air circulate to prevent heat build-up or condensation.
  • 30% Extra Capacity – Optimised baffle geometry adds up to 30% more volume without enlarging the base footprint.

Lifting loops

  • Corner loops – stitched into the four corner seams for even load distribution during crane and forklift handling.
  • Cross-corner loops – stitched diagonally so the top stays fully open while the bag hangs under a fill chute.
  • Double stevedore – two parallel straps allow forklift entry from the length or width side.
  • Single stevedore – one strap around the top perimeter for lifting from any position without repositioning.
  • Sleeve lift – woven-fabric sleeves give forklift tines a wider contact area; suited to reusable, closed-loop supply chains.

Top (filling)

  • Open top – fully open for chute, conveyor or pneumatic filling, then gathered and tied; highest fill rate.
  • Baffle (flap) top – a fabric flap folds down after filling for basic dust and contamination cover.
  • Spout top – a central spout connects to the fill chute or nozzle, creating a contained, low-dust fill path.
  • Spout top with flap – a protective flap over the tied spout adds contamination protection and tamper evidence.
  • Conical spout top – a funnel cone reduces powder bridging and dust on high-speed automated lines.

Bottom (discharge)

  • Plain (flat) bottom – emptied by cutting or tipping, for single-step discharge such as into a mixing vessel.
  • Discharge spout – a central spout for controlled flow into pneumatic conveyors, mixers and hoppers.
  • Conical discharge spout – a tapered bottom that prevents bridging of cohesive or charged fine powders.
  • Discharge spout with security flap – a flap over the closed spout prevents accidental opening and shows tampering.
  • Duffle bottom – the whole base opens for rapid, complete gravity discharge.

FAQ

Type B Bulk Bags — questions answered

01What is a Type B FIBC bulk bag?+

A bulk bag woven from polypropylene with a breakdown voltage below 6 kV, which prevents propagating brush discharges. It is suitable for dry flammable powders with MIE above 3 mJ, but only where no flammable vapours, gases or solvents are present.

02What is the difference between Type A, B, C and D bags?+

Type A has no static protection. Type B prevents propagating brush discharges through low-breakdown-voltage fabric. Type C is conductive and must be grounded. Type D dissipates static without grounding and can be used in explosive atmospheres.

03Are Type B bags anti-static?+

Not strictly. Type B bags prevent propagating brush discharges but do not ground or dissipate charge. Where true static dissipation is needed, use Type C (grounded) or Type D (no grounding) bags.

04Which materials suit Type B bags?+

Dry flammable powders with MIE above 3 mJ, such as certain fine chemicals, pharmaceutical intermediates, flours, sulphur compounds and mineral powders, handled in environments free from flammable solvents and gases.

05What can be customised on Type B bags?+

Construction, loops, top and bottom configuration, fabric GSM (60–240), lamination GSM (15–35), SWL (250–2,000 kg), safety factor (3:1, 5:1, 6:1, 8:1), liner type, dimensions and 1–4 colour printing.
